Many go searching for a sense of purpose, of identity, and have even found that in working to please others–to receive validation from others. Well, our work that we want to be valued comes from God! Ephesians 2:10 says, “ For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
Doing good is a part of our walk with Christ and why bearing the name of Christ is so important. It’s because Christ came to bring good news. News that was trustworthy, truthful, and gives the invitation to be a part of God’s Kingdom–as workers for His glory. The world likes to pick and choose things that are considered good but whenever it comes to the “good” works we are to do as Christians, it is God who determines what is good.
Let’s break down the word “good” shall we? When something is called “Good,” it means to be something that’s beneficial, effective, and righteous. So doing “good” is a way we can please God, because God’s work for us benefits His Kingdom, causes us to be effective with His power, and in Christ, we can become the righteousness God looks for. And before we even thought about coming to the LORD, these good works had already been predestined for us to do.
Now, doing good is important because when we sow in “doing good,” we reap a good harvest. That’s why Galatians 6:9 says, “let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time, we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
So our good works are effective in this: they will return to us. That is a principle. But if we don’t have good works to be accounted for, we won’t have anything to receive back. Proverbs 20:4 says, “sluggards do not plow in season; so at harvest time, they look but find nothing.” So doing good, takes effort, it takes desire, and it takes obedience to the responsibilities God has set for you in His will.
How can you do more good in your life?
